Moroccan international Achraf Hakimi has climbed to the ranks of Africa’s most decorated footballers after playing a key role in Paris Saint-Germain’s UEFA Super Cup victory on Wednesday night.
PSG staged a remarkable comeback from a 0-2 deficit to draw 2-2 with Tottenham Hotspur in Udine, ultimately triumphing 4-3 on penalties at the Bluenergy Stadium.
Hakimi was influential throughout the match, creating one chance, delivering five crosses—one of which found its target—and completing two of six long passes. The 26-year-old right-back also demonstrated composure in possession, completing 69 of 83 passes for an 83% accuracy rate.
Defensively, Hakimi won two of three tackles and remained unbeaten in one-on-one situations. While his attacking runs were more measured than in previous outings, he maintained a pivotal presence on the right flank, particularly in the closing stages as PSG sought the equaliser.
The Super Cup triumph takes Hakimi’s career haul to 17 trophies, placing him just behind African legends Samuel Eto’o and Yaya Touré, who each have 18. At his age, he is well-positioned to surpass them and claim the title of Africa’s most decorated player.
Hakimi’s consistency for both club and country this year has also kept him in the conversation for the 2025 Ballon d’Or, scheduled to be awarded in September. His latest success only reinforces his status among the continent’s elite footballers, with the record now within reach.
