Stade Rennes have become the latest club to express interest in Franco-Gambian midfielder Mahdi Camara in the current transfer window.
The 27-year-old has courted interest in France, with OGC Nice reportedly leading the chase for the enterprising midfielder.
Nice, who fell short to Benfica in the Champions League qualification had come close to securing the signature of Camara this summer, having agreed a four-year deal with the player.
However, fellow French outfit, Stade Rennes have stepped in to hijack the move, identifying Camara as a prime target for the club.
Rennes are in advanced talks with Brest for the acquisition of the midfielder for a fee of around €8m.
Seduced by the club’s project, despite their lack of European football this season, Camara is therefore now set to join Rennes, instead of Nice, whose participation in this season’s UEFA Europa League was confirmed following defeat to SL Benfica on Tuesday.
Camara has been a key part of Brest squad since he joined in the summer of 2022 from boyhood club AS Saint-Étienne.
Last season, he was able to experience the UEFA Champions League for the first time with Les Pirates, helping the club to reach the playoff rounds, where they were eliminated by eventual champions Paris Saint-Germain.
