Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of Malick Thiaw, with the German-Senegalese defender making the switch to the Premier League following his departure from AC Milan.
The 24-year-old centre-back, who made 85 appearances in all competitions during three seasons with the Rossoneri, will wear the number 12 shirt for the Magpies.
His move marks a fresh chapter in his career after parting ways with the Italian giants at the beginning of July.
Thiaw expressed his enthusiasm for the challenge ahead, emphasising his eagerness to integrate into the squad and work under head coach Eddie Howe.
I’m really excited to be joining this great club. I can’t wait to start training and get to know my new teammates and all the staff, said Thiaw. The manager has shown me his vision and what he wants to do with me as a player and with the club itself, which is really exciting. I think Newcastle speaks for itself. It’s a great club, a great club with passionate supporters who I can’t wait to see at St. James’ Park.
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe hailed the acquisition as a significant boost to his squad as they prepare for both domestic and European competition this season.
We are really pleased to have Malick on board, Howe said. He is a player I have long admired and someone who will add real quality to our defensive options. Malick is still young but brings valuable experience of Champions League football, as well as having played in the Bundesliga and Serie A, which is a major asset for us as we return to Europe this season.
The transfer reflects Newcastle’s continued investment in strengthening their squad, with Thiaw’s arrival adding depth and versatility to the defensive ranks.
Known for his composure on the ball and strong aerial presence, he will bring a blend of youth and experience to the back line.
Having developed through the ranks in Germany before making his mark in Italy, Thiaw’s journey to England places him in one of the most competitive football environments in the world.
With the Magpies competing on multiple fronts this season, his ability to adapt to different styles of play is expected to be a key asset.
Thiaw’s first opportunity to feature in Newcastle colours could come in the opening weeks of the Premier League season, with St. James’ Park set to welcome the new signing to its famously passionate crowd.
Welcome to Newcastle, Malick! 🙌
