Kenyan rising star Manzur Okwaro targets CHAN glory on home soil
Manzur Okwaro’s standout performances at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) have positioned the 20-year-old as a symbol of Kenya’s football renaissance, with his composure and leadership qualities earning widespread praise.
The young midfielder’s rapid ascent began at St. Anthony’s Boys Kitale, before joining Kenya Commercial Bank FC, where his growth accelerated.
Okwaro made headlines during the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, showcasing his defensive prowess and tactical maturity.
His performances did not go unnoticed, drawing the attention of Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy, who quickly drafted him into the senior national team setup ahead of the CHAN tournament.
“He’s physically dominant, technically refined, and plays with a confidence that defies his age,” McCarthy said of the youngster. Convinced of Okwaro’s potential, the South African tactician integrated him into the squad with the CHAN competition on home soil in mind.
Though Okwaro had traditionally operated as a central defender or left-back, McCarthy made a bold decision to deploy him in midfield during Kenya’s group stage clash against two-time CHAN champions DR Congo.
The unexpected shift came as a surprise to the player himself. “At first, I didn’t expect it. I was a bit anxious, but once I settled, I just focused on doing my job,” he recalled.
McCarthy offered further insight into the switch: “His energy, bravery, and football IQ made him ideal for the role. We needed someone to disrupt DR Congo’s rhythm, and he did exactly that.”
Okwaro’s presence in the middle of the park proved pivotal, as he broke up play, intercepted passes, and set the tempo with maturity beyond his years.
While Okwaro’s transition into midfield might have raised eyebrows, his performance silenced any doubts. His discipline, tactical awareness, and willingness to adapt highlighted a player with both talent and a deep understanding of the game.
Despite the growing attention, Okwaro remains grounded. “This is just the beginning. I’m improving every match, and I trust the process. I believe I can go far, but it’s about staying focused and working hard,” he stated.
He views CHAN not only as a stage to display his abilities but also as a platform for development. “This tournament gives players like me the chance to grow and to dream of Europe, while also making an impact for our country.”
McCarthy, who has placed considerable faith in the young star, describes him as “a reflection of Kenya’s footballing courage.” The coach believes Okwaro has the mentality and ability to drive the Harambee Stars deep into the tournament. “He gives us balance and bravery. Those are rare traits in someone so young,” he added.
As Kenya eye a historic run in the tournament they are hosting, Okwaro has set clear goals. “I want to help the team reach the final. We owe it to our fans to give everything on home soil,” he affirmed with determination.
With his steady rise and grounded mindset, Manzur Okwaro is fast becoming a name to watch—not only at CHAN 2024, but well beyond.
