Algerian international Fares Chaibi tested in midfield role during Eintracht Frankfurt pre-season victory

Fares Chaibi featured in a more withdrawn position as Eintracht Frankfurt began their pre-season campaign with a 3-2 victory over local rivals FSV Frankfurt.

Now entering his third season at the club, the Algerian international was deployed in a central midfield partnership with Denmark’s Oscar Højlund in a 4-4-2 formation.

Manager Dino Toppmöller chose to experiment with Chaibi in a notably defensive role, limiting the player’s usual influence in advanced positions.

Toppmöller’s tactical approach also included fielding two forwards — Elye Wahi and Jonathan Burkardt — the latter making his unofficial debut for Frankfurt following a €21 million summer move.

The front pair led the line against the fourth-division opposition, while the wide positions were entrusted to two promising youngsters.

On the flanks, 18-year-old Marvin Dills, recently promoted from the reserve squad, operated on the right.

On the left, 19-year-old Can Uzun — a standout performer from last season — continued to build on his growing reputation.

The youthful duo provided energy and width in a match where Frankfurt showed both promise and areas in need of refinement.

Chaibi, often known for his vision and ability in the final third, played a more restrained role throughout the encounter.

With defensive duties taking priority, he made few forays into the attacking zone, staying largely disciplined alongside Højlund in shielding the back line.

It marked a notable change from his usual position as an attacking midfielder or winger.

Despite some early signs of rust and unfamiliarity within the reshuffled setup, Eintracht edged the game 3-2.

While the match served primarily as a tune-up for the players and an opportunity for the coaching staff to assess new combinations, it also highlighted the adaptability of several squad members, including Chaibi.

Eintracht Frankfurt will continue their pre-season preparations with another test in one week, facing Premier League side Aston Villa.

The upcoming fixture will likely provide further insight into Toppmöller’s tactical plans and whether Chaibi’s deeper role is part of a long-term strategy or simply a pre-season experiment.

Chaibi, who represented Algeria at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, will be looking to cement his place in the side ahead of a competitive season that includes domestic and European commitments.
