Guinean defender Mohamed Ali Camara joins Maccabi Tel Aviv after seven seasons at Young Boys

Mohamed Ali Camara has brought his time at BSC Young Boys to a close, signing a long-term deal with Israeli Premier League side Maccabi Tel Aviv.

The Guinean international leaves behind a legacy of domestic dominance and European experience after seven successful seasons in Switzerland.

The 27-year-old central defender made a name for himself in Bern, joining from Hapoel Ra’anana in 2018 and swiftly cementing his place in the heart of the Young Boys defence.

Over the course of 193 appearances in all competitions—including 133 in the league, 16 in domestic cup ties, and 44 in European contests—Camara played a pivotal role in a period of sustained success for the Swiss club. During that time, he contributed seven goals and helped secure five Swiss Super League titles and two Swiss Cups.

Standing at 1.93 metres, Camara brought not only a commanding physical presence but also tactical intelligence and composure to Young Boys’ backline.

His performances on the European stage were equally notable, with the defender featuring regularly in the UEFA Champions League and Europa League. His consistency and leadership made him a fixture in the squad, even captaining the team on occasion.

His move to Maccabi Tel Aviv marks a return to familiar territory. Having started his European career in Israel, Camara is set to embark on a new chapter in a league where he already understands the landscape.

He has signed a three-year contract, with an option to extend for a fourth year, signalling the Israeli club’s long-term faith in his abilities and experience.

Camara’s switch comes at a time of transition for both player and club. While Young Boys paid tribute to his years of service and influence, the defender departs Switzerland with the intent of revitalising his career and contributing to Maccabi Tel Aviv’s domestic and continental ambitions.

On the international front, Camara has been a consistent presence for the Guinea national team. Since making his debut in 2018, he has earned over 20 caps and featured in major tournaments, including the Africa Cup of Nations in 2022 and 2024.

His earlier international career included standout performances in the 2017 U20 AFCON and FIFA U20 World Cup, signalling his potential from a young age.

At Maccabi Tel Aviv, Camara is expected to bring leadership, aerial dominance, and defensive stability to a squad targeting silverware both at home and in Europe.

The move offers him an opportunity to re-establish himself at the top level while providing valuable experience to a team with big ambitions.

Camara’s return to Israel represents more than a simple transfer—it is a strategic move for a seasoned professional seeking to maintain high standards and continue competing at a serious level.

For Maccabi Tel Aviv, securing a defender of his pedigree is a significant boost, as they prepare for the upcoming campaign with renewed intent and expectations.
