AJ Auxerre target Morocco’s El Azzouzi to bolster midfield ahead of Ligue 1 return

AJ Auxerre have set their sights on Moroccan international Oussama El Azzouzi as they seek to reinforce their midfield ahead of the upcoming Ligue 1 campaign.

Following their promotion back to France’s top flight, the Burgundian side are actively pursuing reinforcements to ensure a competitive return.

According to renowned transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, El Azzouzi, currently on the books of Serie A side Bologna, has emerged as a serious target.

The 24-year-old midfielder, who is under contract with the Italian outfit until 2027, endured a difficult 2023/24 season marred by a long-term injury.

This lack of consistent game time may pave the way for a summer exit, with Auxerre seemingly eager to capitalise.

El Azzouzi fits the profile of player Auxerre are believed to be searching for: a defensive midfielder with both physical presence and technical assurance—someone who can provide structure and energy in the heart of the pitch.

His experience across several European leagues adds further appeal.

Before arriving in Italy, El Azzouzi played in the Dutch Eredivisie with Vitesse and FC Emmen, before taking a key developmental step at Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium.

His performances there earned him a move to Bologna and opened the door to the Moroccan national team, where he has now earned six caps.

Despite his injury-plagued season, his value remains around €2 million—a figure considered manageable for a club with Auxerre’s ambitions.

With a midfield that could use additional steel and composure, El Azzouzi’s arrival would mark a significant step toward ensuring the squad’s readiness for the challenges of Ligue 1.

Auxerre’s interest underlines their intent not only to survive but to compete upon their return to the elite level.

Should a deal be completed, it would represent both a calculated risk and a potential coup for the newly promoted club.
