Wydad Athletic Club have reportedly backed head coach Mohamed Amine Benhachem despite their poor performance in the FIFA Club World Cup.
The Moroccan tactician was named as the interim coach following the exit of Rulani Mokwena.
Benhachem made an immediate impact by winning all three matches, helping Wydad secure qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup.
The decision to part ways came as a surprise to some, especially with a major tournament on the horizon, but the Wydad hierarchy felt a change was necessary to stabilise the squad heading into the global stage.
Benhachem was tasked to make an impact at the Club World Cup. However, the Moroccan side suffered a disappointing performance after suffering three consecutive defeats, a 2-0 to City, 4-1 to Juventus, and 2-1 to Al Ain, resulting in an early exit from the competition.
Following the underwhelming performance on the global stage, Benhachem’s future was left in doubt.
Despite the poor performance, Wydad president Hicham Ait Mena and the club’s board have decided to keep faith in Benhachem for the upcoming 2025/26 season.
The Wydad management reportedly believes in his long-term vision and remains confident that he can steer the club to domestic and continental success after signing a two-year contract.
