Rennes secure young Algerian keeper Kilian Belazzoug on first pro deal
Kilian Belazzoug has signed his first professional contract with Stade Rennais, committing his future to the Ligue 1 side until June 2028.
The 18‑year‑old shot‑stopper, born in the Paris region, has been a standout within Rennes’ academy and has earned his place among the club’s talented homegrown talents.
Standing at 1.97 metres, Belazzoug brings both impressive reach and composure between the posts. Having joined Rennes at U15 level from CS Villetaneuse and JA Drancy, he has steadily progressed through the youth ranks, earning promotion to increasingly competitive squads over the years.
During the 2024–25 season, he featured in 12 matches with the U19 side, recording five clean sheets, and made three appearances for Rennes B in the Championnat National 3. It was, however, his performance in the semi-final of the Challenge Espoirs tournament that really drew attention.
Tasked with facing a penalty shootout against Toulouse, Belazzoug delivered a commanding display, making crucial saves that helped Rennes secure a place in the final and won the praise of coaches and staff.
“Signing Kilian represents our belief in nurturing our academy’s goalkeeping talent,” commented Loïc Désiré, Rennes’ sporting director.
“He possesses rare physical attributes and significant potential. Our aim now is to guide his transition toward the first-team environment.”
This contract is a key milestone for both the player and the club. Rennes have built a reputation for developing young stars and integrating them into senior ranks—a pathway clearly mirrored in Belazzoug’s progression.
He now joins a goalkeeping group that includes established professionals, where he will begin training with higher-level players and benefit from top-class coaching.
For Belazzoug, the focus will be on continued hard work, learning from experienced teammates, and seizing opportunities during training and reserve matches.
The club intends to accelerate his growth through targeted development plans, allowing him to gradually adapt to the demands of professional football while gaining vital match experience.
The three-year deal also ensures stability for Belazzoug at a pivotal stage in his career. With the confidence of the club behind him, he has a structured platform to build on his early achievements and position himself as a potential candidate for future first-team inclusion.
Rennes’ new contract underlines the club’s commitment to securing its academy standouts on long-term deals before they attract external interest.
By locking down players like Belazzoug, they not only retain promising talent but also reinforce their reputation as one of France’s most effective youth development centres.
As a young goalkeeper stepping into the world of professional football, Belazzoug will now prepare for life beyond the academy—balancing coaching sessions with regular under-21 matches, and possibly loans or chase for minutes within the senior squad.
His height, agility and calm under pressure offer a unique combination of traits that could serve Rennes well in the years ahead.
For supporters, the signing is a source of excitement—a chance to watch a new generation wearing the Red and Black colors. For the wider footballing community, Belazzoug’s rise illustrates the success of Rennes’ long-term vision and commitment to youth, underlining the importance of structured pathways from academy to senior football.
Congratulations to Kilian Belazzoug on taking this crucial step. A new professional chapter awaits at his home club, with challenges to match his ambition and talent.
