Achraf Hakimi leaves lasting impression on and off the pitch in PSG victory

Achraf Hakimi starred in Paris Saint-Germain’s 2-0 win over the Seattle Sounders on Monday night, a Club World Cup group stage fixture held at Lumen Field, but it was his gesture after the final whistle that truly captured the evening’s emotion.

The Moroccan international delivered a commanding display, capping his performance with a second-half goal that secured PSG’s victory and top spot in Group B.

Yet, amid the statistics and headlines, it was a quiet act of sportsmanship that turned the spotlight on Hakimi’s character beyond his footballing prowess.

Sounders midfielder Paul Rothrock, visibly emotional during his post-match interview, spoke of the moment with disbelief. “I don’t know if I’m dreaming,” he told DAZN. “I can’t believe I played against Achraf Hakimi.

It was a dream for me to face him.”

Rothrock’s awe was met with a heartfelt response from Hakimi, who exchanged shirts with the 26-year-old American.

The moment, though simple in nature, represented something far more meaningful for the young Sounders player—fulfilment of a lifelong dream to stand opposite one of his footballing idols.

While many European clubs, including PSG, often auction worn shirts for charitable or promotional purposes, Hakimi’s decision to give his jersey directly to a rival player underlined a genuine sense of humility and fair play.

The act earned admiration across social media and highlighted the Moroccan’s growing stature not just as a player, but as an ambassador of sportsmanship.

On the field, Hakimi was once again a pivotal figure. Leading by example as Morocco’s captain and a linchpin in PSG’s defensive line, he combined sharp positional awareness with relentless energy down the right flank.

His goal in the 66th minute—set up by Bradley Barcola—was both a demonstration of his attacking instincts and a decisive moment that ensured the French champions collected all three points.

The result, coupled with Botafogo’s unexpected loss to Atlético Madrid, saw PSG take firm control of Group B, positioning themselves strongly for the knockout rounds.

For Hakimi, the goal was his reward in a campaign that has seen him deliver consistently across all competitions.

With 65 appearances already under his belt this season, Hakimi’s physical and mental endurance is drawing increasing praise. Monday’s match marked his third consecutive start in the Club World Cup, reaffirming his role as an irreplaceable presence in Luis Enrique’s system.

Voted man of the match, Hakimi continues to elevate his status on the world stage—not only as one of football’s most dynamic full-backs but also as a figure admired for his composure, class, and humility.

For Paul Rothrock, Monday’s encounter will remain unforgettable—not because of the defeat, but because of a brief exchange with a footballing hero who took the time to make a dream come true.

And for Hakimi, it was yet another night where leadership and humanity shared the spotlight with talent.
