Mohamed Salah cements Premier League legacy with third FWA Player of the Year award
Mohamed Salah has etched his name deeper into Premier League history after being named the Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Player of the Year for the third time—matching the legendary Thierry Henry as the most decorated recipient of the award.
In a campaign defined by remarkable consistency and decisive moments, the Egyptian forward led Liverpool to the Premier League title with an astonishing return of 28 goals and 18 assists in 37 league appearances.
His latest accolade comes after previous FWA triumphs in 2018 and 2022, highlighting a sustained dominance across multiple seasons in England’s top flight.
“This has been my best season ever,” Salah said recently. “I’ve never had a season like this, while winning big trophies. (…) I had a crazy season with a trophy, that gives me a good chance.”
The 2024–25 season has seen the 32-year-old reach extraordinary heights.
Across all competitions, he has amassed 33 goals and 23 assists in 51 matches—an average of more than one goal contribution per game.
Beyond his domestic impact, Salah contributed three goals and four assists in nine UEFA Champions League fixtures and added two goals and an assist in FA Cup outings, reinforcing his value on every front.
Salah’s form did not come in isolation.
It built on two consecutive stellar seasons.
In 2023–24, he again topped the Premier League scoring charts with 26 goals, propelling Liverpool to a strong second-place finish.
The previous year, he tallied 19 goals and 13 assists, reinforcing his reputation as one of Europe’s most complete forwards.
His ability to deliver consistently in one of the world’s most demanding leagues has led many to declare him the greatest African player in Premier League history.
Comparisons with Didier Drogba, Sadio Mané, and Riyad Mahrez are now increasingly lopsided.
While each brought brilliance and trophies, none matched Salah’s combination of goal-scoring, creativity, and endurance across successive seasons.
“I would like to win the Ballon d’Or for my people,” Salah told France Football earlier this year, though he admitted he would still view his career as a success even without the award.
With nine major honours at Liverpool and the league title now back at Anfield, the case for Salah’s 2025 Ballon d’Or candidacy has never been stronger.
Previous finishes—5th in 2019 and 2022, 6th in 2018—hinted at his potential.
This season may finally see it realised.
While many contemporaries have departed Europe for lucrative offers abroad, Salah’s decision to remain in the Premier League speaks volumes.
His hunger for competition, legacy, and history continues to set him apart—on and off the pitch.
