Maghnes Akliouche: French-Algerian midfielder faces crucial summer decision amid PSG and Premier League interest

Maghnes Akliouche’s standout campaign with AS Monaco has sparked widespread interest across Europe, with speculation intensifying over the 23-year-old’s future as the summer transfer window approaches.

The French-Algerian midfielder, who contributed seven goals and twelve assists across all competitions during the 2024/25 season, is reportedly on the radar of several top European clubs — including Paris Saint-Germain and multiple Premier League sides.

Despite mounting speculation, former Algerian international and national team assistant coach Nourredine Kourichi believes that remaining in Monaco for another season could prove to be the wisest course for the young talent.

“He’s developed significantly this season,” Kourichi said. “He’s elegant, technically sound, physically strong, and consistently impactful in the final third. Akliouche has become a central figure for Adi Hütter’s squad.”

AS Monaco, who have secured qualification for the upcoming UEFA Champions League league phase, have made it clear that Akliouche’s wellbeing remains a priority.

The club declined to release him for the upcoming U21 European Championship in Slovakia, citing the need for rest following a demanding season.

In total, Akliouche featured in 43 official matches for Monaco, in addition to appearances for both the French Olympic and U21 teams.

“Monaco is making the right call,” added Kourichi. “A player needs time to recover — especially after such a physically and mentally taxing season. Without adequate rest, the risk of injury increases significantly.”

Akliouche’s current contract runs until June 2028, and while his management has issued a release certificate, Monaco’s valuation of the player stands at €80 million. That price tag could be a stumbling block for potential suitors, including Paris Saint-Germain, who have reportedly been identified as the midfielder’s preferred destination.

However, as reported by Africasoccer, the Ligue 1 champions have yet to make a concrete move, possibly due to financial caution ahead of key fixtures — including the Coupe de France final against Reims and a Champions League final clash with Inter Milan.

“If PSG lifts the Champions League trophy, the financial rewards might influence their stance,” Kourichi observed, referencing the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, where Paris is also set to participate. “In that case, they might be more inclined to invest heavily in players like Akliouche.”

Born in the Île-de-France region, Akliouche fits PSG’s recent strategy of targeting promising domestic talent, following the signings of players such as Bradley Barcola and Désiré Doué. The player’s Parisian roots and attacking flair further reinforce his appeal to the club.

However, interest in the midfielder extends well beyond the French capital. Premier League clubs have shown considerable enthusiasm, with Tottenham Hotspur — fresh off their Europa League victory over Manchester United — considered the most serious contender. Liverpool, Manchester City, and Nottingham Forest are also reportedly monitoring Akliouche’s situation.

“English clubs have the financial muscle to match Monaco’s valuation,” said Kourichi. “They’ve been investing in young French players for years. If he moves, it should be to a club competing in the Champions League. Tottenham ticks that box and will be aiming to solidify their European presence.”

Yet despite the lucrative offers potentially on the table, Kourichi believes that continuity might serve Akliouche best at this stage of his career.

“Staying at Monaco could be the smartest move. He’s in a familiar environment, trusted by his club, and will have Champions League football next season,” the former defender emphasized. “There’s no rush. Another year at his boyhood club could help him refine his game further and make an even stronger leap next time.”

As Europe’s elite clubs circle, the final decision now rests with Akliouche and his advisors. Whether he stays or moves, his trajectory suggests a bright future on both club and international stages.
