Imran Louza poised for surprise return to Morocco squad ahead of June friendlies

Imran Louza could make a surprise return to the Morocco national team for next month’s international friendlies against Tunisia and Benin, with head coach Walid Regragui reportedly considering the Watford midfielder for his latest squad selection.

According to Moroccan outlet El Professor, Louza has been named on a preliminary list of players pre-selected for the Atlas Lions’ upcoming training camp.

The potential recall marks a dramatic turn of events for the 26-year-old, who had seemingly drifted out of the national team picture following injury setbacks and inconsistent form.

Louza, a product of the FC Nantes academy, has always maintained a strong commitment to representing Morocco despite early appearances for France at U20 and U21 level.

He pledged his international future to the North African side shortly after his move to England and quickly made an impression, scoring on his debut start against Guinea-Bissau in October 2021 and adding another goal against Sudan. In total, he has earned 14 caps for Morocco.

However, his promising international trajectory was halted in 2022 when a serious injury ruled him out of contention just before the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Louza had been expected to play a key role in the squad, but the setback came at the worst possible time. Though he returned for training camps in March and June of 2023, he was unable to cement a place in Regragui’s plans.

The 2024-2025 campaign, however, has seen Louza rediscover his best form. Featuring regularly for Watford in the English Championship, the midfielder has made 37 appearances across all competitions, contributing two goals and five assists.

His performances have been marked by composure, tactical intelligence, and consistency—qualities that have placed him at the heart of the Hornets’ midfield.

Louza’s return to prominence comes after a less successful loan spell at FC Lorient, but his form this season suggests he has firmly put those difficulties behind him.

Now under contract with Watford until June 2028, the midfielder appears to have regained the confidence and rhythm that made him one of Morocco’s most promising talents just a few years ago.

For Regragui, Louza’s potential inclusion offers both experience and depth in a competitive midfield setup.

The upcoming fixtures against Tunisia on June 7 and Benin on June 10 are likely to be used as opportunities to test players and assess options ahead of more competitive fixtures later in the year.

Should Louza make the final squad, it would mark a significant milestone in a career that has weathered its share of obstacles.

His return would also serve as a testament to his resilience and continued ambition to contribute to Morocco’s evolving project under Regragui’s leadership.

The final squad announcement is expected in the coming weeks, and all eyes will be on whether Louza’s name makes the cut—a decision that could signify the revival of his international journey.
