Kenyan football is reeling after 66 supporters were hospitalised following violent clashes during a league match between Shabana FC and Gor Mahia on Sunday.
Gor Mahia, the visiting team, claimed a narrow 1-0 victory thanks to a late goal by midfielder Sylvester Wanyama.
However, the match was marred by pre-match chaos in the stands, where fans from both sides were seen hurling stones at each other.
The violence left dozens injured, with 66 supporters confirmed to have been admitted to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital (KTRH) and RAM Hospital. Gor Mahia released a statement acknowledging the unfortunate events.
“We witnessed very sad moments at Gusii Stadium before the game as fans engaged in chaos, as a result, police confirm 66 fans got injured and admitted to KTRH and RAM Hospital in Kisii,” Gor Mahia stated.
“Two fans sustained skull fractures, quick recovery to all our fans who got injured.”
The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) also condemned the violence and emphasised the need for safety in stadiums.
“FKF strongly condemns all forms of violence in our stadiums, football must remain a sport that brings people together – not one that puts lives at risk,” reads FKF statement.
“The safety and well-being of fans, players, and officials remain a top priority for the Federation. We are working closely with the relevant authorities to establish the circumstances that led to the unrest.
“Decisive disciplinary measures will be taken upon conclusion of ongoing investigations.”
