Al Ahly are stepping up efforts to find a new head coach after parting ways with Marcel Koller following their CAF Champions League semi-final defeat to South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns.
The club’s Scouting Committee has shortlisted several names, but many have already been dismissed for various reasons.
Former Feyenoord boss Brian Priske declined the role, preferring to stay in Europe. Ex-Leipzig manager demanded €4.5 million annually, plus salaries for his staff, a package Al Ahly refused.
Sources say club president Mahmoud Al-Khatib dismissed other candidates such as Brazilian Rogério Micale, Swiss coach Rene Weiler, and Portuguese managers Jaime Pacheco and Vitor Bruno. Although officials admire Bruno’s sharp thinking, his limited experience as a head coach remains a major concern.
Bruno only led Porto for seven months after Sergio Conceição’s move to AC Milan, having previously served as his assistant.
Al Ahly are still exploring Portuguese options and are now studying Belgian coach Philippe Clement, who was sacked by Rangers in February after a short stint that began in October 2023.
