Jamie Carragher has expressed skepticism over Liverpool’s potential pursuit of Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, citing the club’s transfer philosophy as a limiting factor.
Isak, who has Eritrean roots, has been in exceptional form this season, registering 24 goals and six assists in 36 appearances for the Magpies.
His performances have attracted interest from top clubs, including Liverpool, who are reportedly seeking to bolster their attacking options amid Darwin Nunez’s inconsistent displays.
However, Carragher believes that Liverpool are unlikely to make a move for the Swedish international.
Speaking on The Overlap US, he stated, “Do I think Liverpool could buy Isak? I don’t, no. I’m not sure Liverpool would want to pay that type of money for one player. I don’t think it’s really in the model, I think Liverpool’s model is: ‘We’ll get the next Isak’.”
He further added, “They’ll probably be kicking themselves saying: ‘Why didn’t we get Isak from Real Sociedad?’ So, I don’t think they’ll go and absolutely break the bank for him.”
Instead, Carragher suggested that Liverpool might target younger talents who align more closely with their recruitment strategy. He pointed to Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike as a potential candidate, emphasizing his age and potential resale value.
“There’s the lad at Eintracht Frankfurt who scored against Tottenham, that smacks to me the type of player Liverpool would sign,” Carragher noted.
“He’s 22, he’s at a club who’d be a selling club, done very well there, went to PSG as a very young boy after lighting up the French league but it didn’t quite work out for him. He’s got great numbers and the type of player that Liverpool would sign rather than maybe going for an Isak.”
