Chelsea’s head coach, Enzo Maresca, expressed his admiration for 18-year-old defender Josh Acheampong following the team’s 3-0 triumph over Legia Warsaw in the first leg of the Europa Conference League quarter-finals on Thursday.
Acheampong, who made his 14th appearance across all competitions this season, delivered a performance that caught Maresca’s attention.
Born in England to Ghanaian parents, Acheampong has steadily risen through Chelsea’s youth ranks, showcasing his versatility and composure on the field.
His recent start against Legia Warsaw further solidified his growing reputation within the squad.
The match saw fellow academy graduate Tyrique George (also of Ghanaian descent) open the scoring with his first senior goal, while Noni Madueke added two more to secure a comprehensive victory.
However, it was Acheampong’s display that prompted Maresca’s commendation.
“The one I fall in love with tonight is Josh Acheampong,” Maresca remarked. “He can be a fantastic player for this club.
“He is a good player, can play in different positions, and he showed that. Since we started, I’m in love with him but tonight he showed he can be a very good player for this club.”
Maresca emphasized Acheampong’s adaptability and eagerness to learn as key attributes.
“He can be good in different positions. The best thing for Josh is that he’s open — he wants to learn. ‘Full-back? No problem, what do I have to do?’”
Acheampong’s journey this season has been notable. After making his senior debut last season, he has accumulated ten appearances, including starts in the Premier League and European competitions.
His commitment was further evidenced by signing a new five-year contract in December 2024, extending his stay at Stamford Bridge until 2029.
