‘I want to take further steps’ – German-Cameroonian Armel Bella-Kotchap open to leaving Southampton
Southampton defender Armel Bella-Kotchap has admitted he is open to leaving the club during the upcoming transfer window, with reports indicating that several clubs across Europe are interested in securing his services.
The 22-year-old, who was born in Paris to Cameroonian parents, has attracted attention from teams in Germany, Italy, and England.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Southampton has set a price tag of approximately €20 million (£17 million) for Bella-Kotchap.
Bella-Kotchap joined Southampton from VfL Bochum in 2022 for around £8.6 million and signed a four-year contract.
During his debut season in the Premier League, he made 24 appearances and provided two assists.
Following Southampton’s relegation, he spent the 2023/24 season on loan at PSV Eindhoven.
However, his time in the Netherlands was hampered by a significant shoulder injury, limiting him to just six appearances.
The defender regained his place in Southampton’s first team under manager Ivan Juric after being sidelined by former coach Russell Martin.
“English football has helped me a lot in my development, and I want to take further steps in the coming years,” he old DAZN.
“Whether that will be in England, I don’t know. I’m open.”
Armel Bella-Kotchap has made only five appearances across all competitions but is expected to contribute more as the campaign enters its final stretch.
