Troost-Ekong optimistic as Super Eagles begin new era under Eric Chelle
William Troost-Ekong has voiced confidence in Nigeria’s new head coach, Eric Chelle, as the Super Eagles prepare for a crucial test in their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.
Chelle’s tenure begins with a challenging encounter against Rwanda on Matchday 5 in Kigali.
Nigeria currently sits fifth in Group C with three points, having yet to secure a victory in the qualifiers.
In contrast, Rwanda is in second place with seven points, trailing group leaders Benin Republic, who temporarily moved to the top following a 2-2 draw with Zimbabwe on Thursday.
Super Eagles ready to adapt
Speaking at a pre-match press conference on Thursday, Troost-Ekong emphasized the players’ determination to make an impression under their new manager.
“We have new ideas, and with a new manager, the players always want to prove themselves to the coach. They want to give their best,” he stated.
He also highlighted the squad’s respect for Chelle, acknowledging the coach’s previous work and the efforts made to instill his philosophy in a short period.
With only three training sessions under the new setup, Troost-Ekong admitted that the team is still adjusting to Chelle’s tactical approach.
It’s a work in progress, and I hope it will be a continuous growth. This first match will be an immediate test,” he noted.
A test of character
Despite the challenging circumstances, Troost-Ekong remains optimistic about the team’s ability to rise to the occasion.
He stressed that success would depend on how well they execute the new strategies.
“I have confidence in the team, and it is up to us to execute the plan well,” he said.
Acknowledging the competitive nature of the fixture, he also pointed out that Rwanda will be equally motivated to perform well under their own circumstances.
“I know Rwanda will be in the same situation, motivated to impress the new coach,” he concluded.
With the stakes high and the Super Eagles eager to turn their fortunes around, Friday’s match in Kigali will serve as a crucial test for both Chelle and his squad.
