Barcelona legend and former Champions League winner David Villa has expressed his desire for the club to look to the Premier League in their search for a new striker.
Villa specifically highlighted Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak, who boasts Eritrean heritage, as a strong candidate to eventually replace Robert Lewandowski at the Catalan club.
Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, Villa praised Isak, who previously played in LaLiga for Real Sociedad, emphasizing his familiarity with the Spanish league and his qualities as a forward.
“There are many strikers (who could replace Lewandowski at Barcelona). It’s not just who would fit, it’s also who can be signed.
“There are very good strikers. Isak is a very good player and knows La Liga. You think of (Erling) Haaland as a central striker but (laughs) I don’t know if City would let him go when they just extended his contract.
“There are many strikers and everyone would like to play for Barça. I’m sure the club will do a fantastic job when needed to sign (Robert) Lewandowski’s replacement.”
Isak, who joined Newcastle United in 2022, has been a standout performer for the Premier League side.
The 24-year-old Swedish international, whose father is Eritrean, is the third highest scorer in the Premier League this season.
