Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo has lauded his team’s resilience and flexibility in the aftermath of the Reds’ important 2-0 triumph over Manchester City in the Premier League.
The Dutch international, who has Togolese and Ghanaian roots through his father, emphasized the importance of the Reds’ ability to adjust their playing style to meet the demands of high-stakes encounters.
Gakpo, who has contributed 16 goals and 5 assists in 37 appearances this season, reflected on the match’s unique challenges.
“I think those games maybe not the games you want to play beforehand, that you think that ‘Oh, maybe we are not so much in possession’ and everything. But it’s needed in the moment.
“That’s also I think a big quality of us this season that the game asked this from us, and we do it and we pull through at the end and scored two amazing goals. That was a very important performance from us,” Gakpo said.
The victory at the Etihad Stadium has solidified Liverpool’s position at the summit of the Premier League table, extending their lead to 11 points over their nearest competitors.
Gakpo also provided insights into the post-match atmosphere in the Liverpool dressing room.
He revealed that while the initial reaction was one of jubilation, captain Virgil van Dijk played a crucial role in maintaining the team’s focus on the challenges ahead.
“I think when you come in straight after you are happy. After the game obviously the manager speaks all the time, but the captain did as well to just keep us calm and keep us focused at the games ahead because the season is not finished with this win.
“We still have 11 more games to go. We have to do the same things again and again and again and then we see where we will end,” Cody Gakpo stated.
