Galatasaray’s efforts to sign Moroccan right-back Zakaria El Ouahdi have reportedly fallen through, as the player has declined a move during the winter transfer window.

The Turkish champions had identified El Ouahdi as a key target to bolster their defense but were unable to secure his signature.

The 23-year-old, who currently plays for Belgian side Genk, has been in outstanding form this season.

Since joining from RWDM two years ago, El Ouahdi has made significant strides, featuring in 24 matches (22 as a starter) this campaign and contributing four goals and one assist.

His performances have earned him more than 2,000 minutes of playing time, cementing his role in the team’s lineup.

Player’s focus on Genk

According to Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri, Galatasaray approached El Ouahdi last weekend with an offer.

However, the Antwerp-born defender opted to remain with Genk for the remainder of the season, showing no interest in a mid-season transfer.

His decision aligns with his commitment to the club, where he is under contract until 2028.

While El Ouahdi has turned down a move this winter, a transfer next summer appears more likely, with growing interest in his services from clubs across Europe.

Moroccan allegiance

El Ouahdi’s loyalty to his Moroccan roots has also been evident in his international career.

Despite eligibility to represent Belgium, he has expressed a strong desire to succeed with Morocco.

The reigning African U23 champion and Olympic bronze medalist with Morocco reaffirmed his commitment to the national team last year.

Speaking on the matter, El Ouahdi emphasized his ambition to earn his place with the Moroccan senior squad, stating, “It’s not up to me to suddenly slam the door.

His comments came after speculation about his international future, with some fans initially questioning his intentions.

While the defender remains focused on his club career for now, his growing reputation on the pitch and firm allegiance to Morocco make him a player to watch in the coming transfer windows.

For Galatasaray, however, the search for a right-back continues.
