Athletic Club’s hopes for their upcoming Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Barcelona have taken a hit with the news that Spanish-Ghanaian forward Nico Williams is likely to be sidelined due to injury.
The club announced on Tuesday afternoon that the 22-year-old winger was unable to participate in training with his teammates, raising concerns ahead of the crucial match.
While Athletic’s medical staff did not specify a serious injury, they confirmed that Williams did not train as a precautionary measure.
“The player is suffering from a contusion on his left ankle and will be monitored for further development,” the statement revealed.
Williams, who has Ghanaian roots, has not reached the same level of performance as last season, yet he remains a target for several top European clubs, including Barcelona, which showed interest in acquiring him during the summer transfer window.
This season, he has managed to score two goals and provide five assists across 23 appearances in all competitions.
As Athletic Club prepares for the semi-final clash, the absence of Williams could significantly impact their strategy against the formidable Barcelona side.
