Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has dismissed concerns over his side’s reliance on Iqraam Rayners as their sole scorer during his first three matches in charge.
Rayners has been the decisive figure in each of those games, including a crucial strike against AmaZulu at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
Rayners’ current form has been remarkable, with the forward scoring in seven consecutive matches, including a goal for the national team against South Sudan.
In his latest club appearances, he netted the winner in Sundowns’ league clash against AmaZulu, struck against Raja Casablanca in the CAF Champions League, and found the back of the net in another league game against his former club.
Cardoso, speaking in Durban, expressed no concerns over the apparent dependence on Rayners for goals, emphasizing that his team’s ability to create chances is what matters most.
“I’m not worried because we are creating opportunities,” he stated. “Rayners is doing well, but he’s not the only one capable of scoring. I trust the rest of the team to step up when needed.”
The victory over AmaZulu propelled Sundowns to the top of the league table with 27 points, three ahead of their nearest rivals, Orlando Pirates.
The match, however, was not without drama. Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, who also serves as South Africa’s national team captain, was shown a red card for handling the ball outside his penalty area.
Despite this setback, Sundowns managed to secure a vital win.
Following the match, the team returned to Johannesburg to enjoy a brief Christmas break. They are set to return to Durban on 28 December for their next league encounter against Richards Bay.
Cardoso’s calm demeanor and trust in his squad reflect his confidence in maintaining Sundowns’ dominance in both domestic and continental competitions.
With Rayners continuing his red-hot streak, Sundowns appear well-positioned to build on their current momentum.
