Victoria United President alleges occult practices amid controversy
Victoria United’s president, Valentin Nkwain, has made bold claims of occult practices in Cameroonian football as the reigning champions prepare for the 2024-2025 Elite One season. Known for his outspoken nature, Nkwain has linked the challenges faced by his club to alleged supernatural influences, sparking debate across the football community.
Last season, Victoria United clinched the Elite One title in a campaign shadowed by controversy.
Critics questioned the legitimacy of their victory, accusing the club of manipulating results.
However, these allegations were dismissed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), clearing the team of wrongdoing.
“It’s Pure Black Magic”
Speaking to reporters, Nkwain did not hold back in discussing what he described as “black magic” aimed at derailing his team.
Reflecting on a season marred by inconsistent results at certain venues, he claimed the setbacks were not purely football-related.
“A lot of black magic is happening, but I will overcome it,” he stated. “I played 12 matches between Middle Farms and Centenary Stadium (Limbe) without winning a single one.
This is pure black magic, and it exists in football.”
His comments, first reported by journalist Afeseh Apong, highlight a belief that non-sporting factors are influencing outcomes.
Nkwain also alluded to regional bias, suggesting hostility from some quarters because of his origins.
“I know my people hate me because I am not from the South West but from the North West.
I will fight and win at this stadium,” he added, vowing to defy the challenges he attributes to both mystical practices and regional rivalries.
A Divisive Leader
Nkwain’s remarks are likely to fuel further scrutiny of his leadership and the club’s operations.
As a prominent figure in Elite One, his perceived closeness to Samuel Eto’o, president of the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot), has made him a polarizing figure.
While some see his ambitions as a driving force for Victoria United’s success, others view his methods with skepticism.
Looking Ahead
For Victoria United, the new season brings both opportunity and pressure.
The club’s supporters will demand a campaign that solidifies their championship credentials, while detractors will watch closely for any signs of controversy.
Nkwain’s allegations of black magic have added a dramatic subplot to the start of the season, reflecting the intense and, at times, surreal world of Cameroonian football.
As the matches unfold, Victoria United’s ability to rise above the noise will be tested both on and off the pitch.
