South Africa Football Association (SAFA) President Danny Jordaan has been arrested over allegations of misusing R1.3 million of the football association’s funds between 2014 and 2018, AfricaSoccer.com understands

The Hawks, South Africa’s Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, have been investigating claims that Jordaan used SAFA’s money for personal security and public relations services without board approval.

On Wednesday, police arrested Jordaan, 73, along with another SAFA executive, 55, and a businessman, 46.

The investigation revealed that Jordaan allegedly hired private security guards and a PR company using SAFA’s funds without authorization from the board

The Hawks conducted a search at SAFA’s office on March 8, 2024, seizing computers and files as evidence, which led to the arrests.

The three men are set to appear in the Palm Ridge Commercial Crimes Court.

This development has sparked calls for Jordaan to step down, with activists urging for new leadership to bring fresh ideas to the football association.

The case against Jordaan was initiated by former SAFA vice-president William Mooka, supported by affidavits from other former executives.

This arrest marks a significant moment in South African football, highlighting the ongoing efforts to address corruption and ensure accountability within the sport’s governing bodies.
