Rooney urges Carrick to consider Fernandes break as Manchester United captain comes under pressure
Michael Carrick faces a major test of his authority at Manchester United when his side host Bournemouth on Sunday, with Bruno Fernandes’ public criticism of the club and manager placing the captain’s position under scrutiny.
Fernandes’ comments followed United’s heavy 4-1 defeat by Como. In one interview, he questioned Carrick’s approach, while in another he criticised the club and accused it of living on past achievements.
The Portugal international could now be left out of the starting line-up as Carrick attempts to reassert his control over the dressing room. United have taken only seven points from their opening seven Premier League matches and sit 15th, level with Crystal Palace and one point ahead of 17th-placed Bournemouth.
Carrick delivered a firm message at his news conference on Friday, speaking for five minutes and 36 seconds before taking questions. He addressed the team’s poor results, the importance of supporters, Manchester United’s history and his expectations of the players.
He repeatedly referred to humility and hard work, in remarks that appeared directed at his squad during a difficult period. Carrick also stressed that Manchester United was bigger than any individual.
The manager’s position has become more challenging after United won only two of their first 11 matches of the season, against newly promoted Ipswich Town and Azerbaijani club Sabah.
Fernandes’ form adds to pressure
Fernandes’ recent performances have also attracted criticism. He has scored four goals and provided one assist this season, with all six of his goal contributions coming in only two matches against Ipswich Town and Sabah.
He has neither scored nor assisted in the other nine games.
That downturn, combined with his public remarks, leaves Carrick needing to make a clear decision quickly, despite a lengthy injury list that has further complicated his task.
Former United captain Wayne Rooney has already suggested that Fernandes could benefit from time away from the spotlight. Rooney believes the midfielder has lost some of his sharpness and fitness after a long season and involvement in the World Cup.
Rooney referred to Sir Alex Ferguson’s handling of Cristiano Ronaldo during the Portuguese forward’s time at Manchester United. He said Ronaldo was occasionally given an unexpected week off to recover his energy and return in better condition.
According to the Mirror, Rooney argued that Fernandes may need a similar break. He warned that continuing to place pressure on the midfielder could increase his frustration and have a damaging effect on his form.
Carrick has not revealed whether Fernandes will lose the captaincy. He has said only that the interests of the team and the club must come first, and that he will make whichever decision best serves Manchester United.
After motivating the squad following Ruben Amorim’s departure and taking permanent charge in the summer, Carrick must now show he can manage a crisis as well as periods of success.
Leaving Fernandes out against Bournemouth would be a significant step towards restoring discipline and demonstrating that every player’s place depends on the team’s interests, regardless of reputation.
