Xabi Alonso reflects on Amine Adli’s injury setback

Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has expressed disappointment over the injury of Moroccan midfielder Amine Adli, who was sidelined with a fibula injury during last Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Brest. Despite not being an undisputed starter, Adli has been a valuable part of Alonso’s squad, and his absence is set to impact the team’s depth and strategy in the coming months.

Speaking on the setback, Alonso described Adli’s absence as a “big loss,” noting the 24-year-old’s influence within the team, both on and off the field.

“He’s a very important player who has a significant influence,” Alonso said. “I spoke with him yesterday after the operation. Everything went well, and I hope we win the game against Bremen for him.”

The coach’s remarks underscore Adli’s role as a crucial piece in Leverkusen’s current campaign.

Adli, who suffered the fibula injury to his left leg, has been a consistent presence for Bayer Leverkusen this season, contributing in 12 matches, including five as a starter.

While he isn’t always featured for the full 90 minutes, his versatility and skill have made him a trusted asset in Alonso’s rotation.

His injury now poses a challenge to the team as they continue their Bundesliga and Champions League campaigns.

The injury is expected to keep Adli sidelined for approximately three months, with a potential return to the squad targeted for January or February 2025.

For Adli, this setback interrupts a promising season in which he had begun to solidify his place within the squad and make impactful contributions.

This is a considerable blow for the Leverkusen midfielder, who was looking to further establish himself in the team.

In the meantime, Leverkusen will need to rely on other options within their ranks to fill the gap left by Adli as they aim to maintain their competitive edge across all fronts.
