CAF issues ultimatum to Kwesi Appiah over dual roles with Ghana FA and Sudan national team

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has written to Sudan national team head coach James Kwesi Appiah, raising concerns over a conflict of interest involving his dual roles.

Appiah currently serves as both the head coach of the Sudanese national football team and as a member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council.

With the two nations scheduled to face each other in the upcoming AFCON 2025 qualifiers on October 10 and 15, 2024, CAF is concerned about the ethical implications of Appiah holding such influential positions for both teams.

CAF’s Director of Legal Affairs, Felix Majani, has outlined in a letter dated October 6, 2024 that Appiah must take immediate steps to resolve this conflict of interest.

Specifically, the governing body expects him to step down from one of the roles temporarily until the conclusion of the AFCON qualifiers.

Appiah has been given until Tuesday, October 8, 2024, to confirm in writing the actions he has taken to address the situation.

Failure to comply will result in the matter being referred to the CAF Disciplinary Board.

This situation highlights the importance of maintaining transparency and fairness in international football, especially in high-stakes tournaments like AFCON, where the integrity of the competition must be preserved at all costs.
