Ghana calls up Forson Amankwah for AFCON 2025 qualifiers

Norwich City midfielder Forson Amankwah has been called up to the Ghana national team for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. Initially named on the reserve list by Black Stars coach Otto Addo, Amankwah’s inclusion in the squad marks a significant comeback after recovering from a recent injury that cast doubt on his availability.

Amankwah suffered a dislocated shoulder last Tuesday during Norwich’s 4-0 defeat at Selhurst Park, leading to his exclusion from the squad list announced last Thursday.

However, in a testament to his resilience, the 21-year-old made a swift recovery and returned to action over the weekend, playing 45 minutes in Norwich’s 1-0 victory over Coventry City.

His performance was strong enough to earn him a place in the national team, replacing Elisha Owusu, who was not retained for the upcoming qualifiers.

This call-up represents Amankwah’s second opportunity with the Black Stars, having previously been selected for friendly matches against Nigeria and Uganda in March.

Despite not yet making his competitive debut for the national team, Amankwah has shown promise at Norwich, contributing two assists in six appearances this season.

The young midfielder will now join the Black Stars in their training camp in Accra as they prepare for crucial AFCON qualifying matches.

Ghana is set to face Angola on September 5 and Niger in Morocco four days later. For Amankwah, this is a chance to solidify his place in the national team and make a significant impact in his country’s bid for qualification.
