Senegalese international Saliou Ciss, a key figure in Senegal’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory, has recently sparked controversy after remarks he made led to widespread speculation about his retirement from professional football. The left-back, who has been without a club since leaving AS Nancy in July 2022, found himself at the center of a media storm following comments that were interpreted as an official retirement announcement.
During a recent public appearance in Senegal, Ciss, who has earned 39 caps for his national team, was asked about his future in football.
His response, “I stopped playing football,” was widely reported as a confirmation of his retirement.
When pressed for further explanation, he simply stated, “Just like that. I think it’s time.”
These statements, which seemed to indicate the end of his playing career, were quickly picked up by the Senegalese press, with the daily Record leading the charge in reporting the news.
However, Ciss has since issued a strong denial, claiming that his words were taken out of context. Taking to Instagram, the 34-year-old expressed his frustration over what he described as an overinterpretation of his comments.
“The journalist called me out, and I automatically replied, ‘don’t talk to me about football,'” he explained, clarifying that he had not intended to make an official statement about retiring from professional football.
“But I never did an interview to say that I was ending my career as a professional footballer.
I told him that I am on the other side, (that) I take care of my family,” he added, suggesting that his initial response was more about deflecting the topic than making a formal announcement.
Ciss went on to demand a correction from the media, emphasizing that any official declaration regarding his retirement would come directly from him.
“The day I end my career, I will announce it myself—Saliou Ciss, Senegalese international,” he asserted.
While his comments have led to speculation that his retirement may not be far off, Ciss made it clear that he has not yet made a definitive decision.
This incident highlights the sensitivity surrounding the careers of high-profile athletes, particularly when they reach a certain stage in their careers.
Ciss, who turns 35 on September 15, has had a notable career, including his crucial role in Senegal’s historic AFCON 2021 triumph.
His experience and contributions to Senegalese football have made him a respected figure, and any announcement regarding his future will undoubtedly be met with significant interest.
For now, Ciss remains officially active, though his comments suggest that a formal retirement announcement could be on the horizon.
Until then, the football world will wait for the final word from the player himself, rather than relying on second-hand interpretations of his remarks.
