Senegal MP demands transparency in public fund usage for AFCON 2023 and World Cup 2022

Senegalese MP Cheikh Thioro Mbacké has called for a thorough audit and full disclosure of public funds spent during Senegal’s campaigns in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the 2022 FIFA World Cup. This request for transparency comes on the heels of disappointing performances in both tournaments.

MP Mbacké’s appeal centers on concerns regarding the management of public funds by the Ministry of Sports and the Senegalese Football Federation.

He criticizes the lack of an “exhaustive assessment” from the Federation, particularly after Senegal’s early exit from AFCON 2023, where the national team was eliminated in the round of 16. The letter outlines five specific areas where Mbacké seeks detailed information:

  1. Total Expenditure: The overall amount of public funds allocated for the campaigns in AFCON 2023 and the World Cup 2022.
  2. Player Bonuses: The exact sums paid as bonuses to the players who participated in these tournaments.
  3. Staff and Official Bonuses: The financial rewards given to the coaching staff and other officials involved.
  4. Financial Balance Sheet: Whether a financial balance sheet exists that details the Federation’s spending and revenue during these events.
  5. Proof of Transparency: Documentation proving the “good management and transparency” of the funds used for these campaigns.

MP Mbacké emphasizes the critical importance of accountability in the management of public funds, insisting that the Ministry of Sports provide clear and comprehensive answers.

This demand reflects a broader expectation among the Senegalese public for responsible and transparent governance, especially in matters involving substantial financial investments.

“Accountability in public affairs management is paramount,” Mbacké states, urging the Ministry of Sports to uphold these principles by offering detailed explanations regarding the use of funds.

His letter underscores the public’s right to know how their resources are being utilized, particularly in high-stakes international competitions that attract significant national interest and investment.

The Ministry of Sports now faces increased pressure to address these concerns and provide the requested financial transparency.

As Senegal continues to invest in its sporting endeavors, the response to Mbacké’s call for clarity will be closely watched by the public and may set a precedent for future oversight in sports administration.
