2025 AFCON: Ismaïla Sarr Set for duty as Oliver Glasner confirms Senegal call-up

Ismaïla Sarr is expected to join Senegal for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner confirmed that the winger will link up with his national team despite recently suffering a hamstring injury.

Sarr was forced off the pitch after 38 minutes during Palace’s defeat to Manchester United on 30 November, raising concerns over his availability for the tournament, which runs from 21 December 2025 to 18 January 2026.

His fitness has been closely monitored since, but Glasner indicated on Thursday that Senegal will make the final decision regarding his return to competition.

Speaking on the eve of Crystal Palace’s Conference League fixture against Shelbourne FC, Glasner explained that while Sarr is unlikely to recover in time for Sunday’s Premier League match against Manchester City, preparations are being made for his departure to join the Senegal squad.

Ismaïla Sarr is unlikely to be available for Manchester City. I think he will participate in the Africa Cup of Nations because the Federation (FSF) wants to assess him. Every nation has the right to evaluate its players. I expect him to go, and we’ll see after that, said the Austrian coach.

The 27-year-old wideman, who has produced 18 goals and eight assists in 76 appearances for Palace, had been a key figure in the club’s campaign prior to his injury setback.

His confirmed availability comes as a relief to Senegal, who are preparing to defend their continental status with a squad expected to feature several regular starters returning from fitness concerns.

While Crystal Palace remain hopeful of his swift recovery, they will now be without Sarr during a crucial period of the Premier League season.

His departure adds further pressure to Glasner’s attacking options, already stretched by injuries and fixture congestion.

For Senegal, however, Sarr’s inclusion offers a significant boost.

The Lions of Teranga are counting on the winger’s pace, direct play and tournament experience as they prepare for a demanding group stage in Morocco.

The national team’s medical staff will evaluate Sarr on arrival to determine whether he can participate in the opening matches or require additional recovery time.

With arrangements already in motion, Sarr is expected to fly out shortly after the weekend, with his status for the tournament set to be confirmed by Senegal’s technical team in the coming days.
