Zothwane begins Sekhukhune United reign with goalless draw against TS Galaxy

Sekhukhune United returned to the top eight of the Betway Premiership after beginning Zothwane’s reign with a goalless draw against TS Galaxy at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday evening.

The result gave Babina Noko a point after three consecutive defeats by Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 and Betway Premiership. They had been looking for a response in front of their home supporters, while TS Galaxy arrived hoping to build on their victory over Marumo Gallants and continue their progress up the table.

TS Galaxy made the brighter start and could have taken the lead inside the opening exchanges. Sedwyn George rose strongly to meet a cross in the penalty area, but his header drifted wide of the far corner.

The opening period was otherwise evenly contested, with neither side able to establish clear control. Sekhukhune United gradually began to find more space in the final third and threatened when Mcedisi Vandala met a cutback from D’Angelo Kazeema across the face of goal.

The visitors finished the first half with the better opportunity, however. An unforced mistake in midfield allowed Mpho Mvelase to move into a promising position. He exchanged passes before breaking through on goal, but, with the target seemingly at his mercy, he headed wide.

Sekhukhune United made two changes at the interval, shortly after parting company with coach Cedric Kaze. Simon Ramabu replaced Vandala, while Bradley Mojela came on for Oageng Phiri.

The second half began quietly, with both teams struggling to create a clear opening. TS Galaxy then came close to breaking the deadlock when Mlondi Mncwango struck first time from a corner, although the defender’s effort went wide.

TS Galaxy continued to play with attacking intent and produced another warning when Victor Letsoalo met a delivery at the back post. His effort narrowly missed the near corner as the visitors pressed for a breakthrough.

Sekhukhune United finished strongly and went closest to claiming all three points in the closing stages. Substitute Chibuike Ohizu met a cross with a powerful header from close range, but TS Galaxy held firm to preserve the draw.

Neither side could find the decisive touch in a match that remained competitive but goalless throughout. Sekhukhune United’s point was enough to move them back into the Betway Premiership’s top eight, while TS Galaxy collected a valuable point away from home as they continued their efforts to climb the table.
