Zamalek fans rally behind debt drive as club battles FIFA transfer ban crisis

Zamalek have turned to the strength of their supporters in a bid to resolve mounting financial obligations and clear the way for new player registrations ahead of the new season.

The Cairo giants launched a crowdfunding initiative through the “Zamalkawy” mobile application, with the digital campaign reportedly raising the required funds to settle part of the club’s FIFA-imposed transfer restrictions in under 24 hours.

According to the platform’s developers, all subscription revenue generated through the app is now being directed entirely toward paying off the club’s outstanding foreign debts. The move is designed to ease the financial pressure that has left Zamalek facing multiple registration bans from world football’s governing body.

In a statement, the app’s management expressed satisfaction with the early response from supporters, while urging continued backing for the initiative.

They also confirmed that the platform will feature live financial tracking tools, allowing fans to monitor in real time how much money is being raised and how it is being allocated toward resolving the club’s transfer issues.

Zamalek are currently dealing with a severe backlog of financial disputes, with FIFA records showing a growing number of unresolved cases linked to the club. The total obligations are estimated at around $6.17 million, covering multiple claims from former players and coaches.

Recent sanctions have added further pressure, with FIFA imposing additional transfer restrictions over unpaid wages and compensation disputes involving former coach Yannick Ferrera and ex-striker Samson Akinyoola.

The club must settle all outstanding debts before the end of May in order to secure the necessary licensing to compete in next season’s Confederation of African Football (CAF) competitions.

Despite the financial turmoil, the campaign comes at a mixed moment for Zamalek, who recently secured their 15th Egyptian Premier League title after a narrow 1-0 win over Ceramica Cleopatra.

However, disappointment followed in continental competition after a penalty shootout defeat to USM Alger in the CAF Confederation Cup final, a result that also cost the club a significant financial windfall that had been expected to help ease their debt burden.

With official funding channels under strain, supporters have stepped forward once again, playing a central role in efforts to stabilise the club’s finances and restore eligibility for future transfers.
