Zamalek board convenes urgent meeting at president’s residence to address Al Ahly match dispute

The Zamalek Board of Directors held an urgent meeting on Sunday evening at the residence of club president Hussein Libi. The meeting, which took place outside the club’s premises, was called to discuss the escalating crisis regarding the club’s refusal to play the upcoming match against Al Ahly.

Former Al Ahly and Egypt national team goalkeeper Ahmed Shobier provided detailed insights into the meeting during his radio show. Shobier revealed that the meeting was lengthy, with all board members in attendance.

The discussion was intense, with a unanimous decision reached to stand firm on the decision not to participate in the match against Al Ahly.

Shobier elaborated on the board’s stance, stating, “The Zamalek officials believe their position is justified. These are the rights of Zamalek, and there must be a defense of the club’s rights and fairness for all.”

He emphasized that the board members feel they have substantial support from the club’s fan base for their decision to boycott the match.

The board’s resolve appears unwavering, with Shobier adding, “The members see their stance as correct and are not willing to back down.

When discussions arose about finding a solution, they directed inquiries to the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) and the Egyptian Professional Clubs Association, insisting that the Zamalek board should not be the ones seeking solutions.

They believe strong decisions need to be made, and if such decisions are taken, Zamalek might consider returning to play their league matches.”

The meeting also covered potential escalation measures, with a focus on legal avenues rather than any form of misconduct.

Zamalek officials expressed the need for a critical review of the roles of the competitions and refereeing committees, aiming for significant reforms to address ongoing issues.

“Zamalek’s management believes there must be a stand against the current situation and a correction of the course of events,” Shobier noted.

Despite Zamalek’s firm stance, the Professional Clubs Association and the EFA have not conceded.

“The Association has brought in referees, who are already in Egypt. They have continuously stated that they have done everything within their power and are striving to find a resolution with Zamalek to avoid any disruptions in the league,” Shobier concluded.
