Yves Bissouma in Amsterdam for Ajax medical and potential free transfer

Yves Bissouma has arrived in Amsterdam to undergo a medical ahead of a possible move to Ajax, two weeks after the summer transfer window closed.

The 30-year-old Mali international is a free agent following the expiry of his contract with Tottenham Hotspur this summer. Ajax have maintained their interest in the experienced midfielder, who was among the players they monitored during the summer.

No agreement was reached at that time, but Ajax technical director Jordi Cruijff is now examining the possibility of signing Bissouma, according to De Telegraaf on Monday.

Bissouma spent four seasons with Tottenham Hotspur after joining from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2022 for a fee slightly below 30 million euros. He has made more than 200 appearances in the Premier League.

His arrival would address a gap in the Ajax squad. Sofyan Amrabat is currently the club’s only defensive midfielder, while options are also limited in the number-eight position. Bissouma has experience playing in both roles.

Ajax are aiming to compete in three competitions and believe they need sufficient depth across the squad. The club are therefore considering bringing in Bissouma despite the transfer window having closed, with the midfielder available without a transfer fee.

The decision now rests with Bissouma, who has won 46 caps for Mali and also has other opportunities in more highly regarded leagues.

His most recent competitive appearance came in May.
