Senegal teen Yaya Diémé makes first Ligue 1 start for Strasbourg

Senegalese teenager Yaya Diémé has made his first Ligue 1 start for RC Strasbourg, marking a key milestone in his early development despite a 2-1 defeat to Toulouse FC at the Stade de la Meinau.

The 18-year-old winger, who joined Strasbourg in January from Diambars FC, was handed his first starting opportunity in the French top flight as the Alsatian club looked to build on an early lead. However, Strasbourg were unable to hold on, eventually falling to a narrow home defeat.

Diémé played 72 minutes before being substituted for Julio Enciso, completing a composed and disciplined performance on his first league start.

He showed promising signs in possession, with a steady passing display that reflected his comfort within the team structure.

Since his arrival in Alsace, Diémé has mainly featured for Strasbourg’s reserve side as he adapts to European football.

His inclusion in the starting XI against Toulouse represents a significant step in his integration into the senior squad.

He was part of the Senegal side that won the 2023 U17 Africa Cup of Nations, a tournament in which he played a key role in their success.

His development continued with further international success, as he helped Senegal secure the 2024 WAFU U20 title in Sierra Leone, underlining his progression through the national youth system.

Strasbourg moved quickly to secure his signature, announcing a long-term contract that runs until 2030, signalling their belief in his potential and long-term value to the club.

While the result against Toulouse was disappointing for Strasbourg, Diémé’s involvement was viewed as a positive step in his adaptation to top-level football.
