Xabi Alonso: Jordan Henderson’s experience already making an impact at Chelsea

Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso says Jordan Henderson’s professionalism, character and experience will prove valuable as the midfielder settles into life at Stamford Bridge.

The 35-year-old made his first appearance for the Blues against Brentford, playing the full 90 minutes despite not yet being at peak match sharpness. Alonso viewed completing the game as an important step after Henderson missed pre-season and Chelsea’s opening matches.

The former Liverpool captain also used the international break to work on his understanding of Chelsea’s tactical approach and develop relationships with his new team-mates. Rather than take additional time off, Henderson chose to remain in training as he looked to make an immediate contribution.

Alonso believes that determination reflects the qualities Henderson can bring to the squad, although he accepts the midfielder’s understanding of Chelsea’s demands will continue to develop with more time at the club.

“He didn’t want many days off,” said Alonso. “For him it was important to have the feeling of being back on the pitch after missing pre-season, missing the first games, and to feel how his arm was feeling and to have that confidence.

“It was important to unlock those first minutes on the pitch. That he was playing that tempo, that intensity for 90 minutes, it was good, and I think that now it will be getting better.”

Henderson’s decision to continue working during the break has particularly impressed Alonso, who considers a player’s personality as important as their technical ability when building his squad.

“We need the right players in terms of quality, in terms of personality, and Hendo has great personality, great experience in the league,” he said.

“Now we have had more time with him, he can connect very well with the players.”

Alonso added that Henderson’s endurance against Brentford was encouraging given the midfielder’s lack of competitive preparation. The Chelsea manager expects his condition and influence to improve as he spends more time training and playing with the squad.
