Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has praised Morgan Rogers as a “complete modern player” after the England international helped his side beat Bournemouth 5-1.
Rogers scored his fourth goal for Chelsea since completing his major summer move from Aston Villa. The attacking midfielder has also contributed four assists since joining the club.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup was also mentioned as part of the context surrounding Rogers’ start at Stamford Bridge, with Alonso impressed by the player’s ability to make a strong impact despite having featured heavily for England during the recent tournament.
Alonso said Rogers’ form had not surprised him and highlighted the qualities that have allowed him to settle quickly at Chelsea.
“No, [his form isn’t a surprise] because he is young, he’s fresh, he’s strong and he’s quick,” Alonso said at his post-match news conference.
“He is a very complete modern football player. His availability is also very high, and this is very important.
“He looks fresh and he is enjoying [his football] because he’s a great guy and is connecting very well with his team-mates, and with everyone.
“He is having a great impact on the team and the club.”
Rogers’ goal against Bournemouth continued a productive beginning to his Chelsea career, with his scoring and creative contributions coming alongside his regular involvement in the team.
Alonso also pointed to Rogers’ physical condition and his willingness to remain available as important factors in his adaptation to Chelsea. The manager said the player had maintained a fresh appearance and was enjoying his football at the club.
His relationship with his team-mates was another feature praised by Alonso, who said Rogers was connecting well with those around him as he established himself in the squad.
The victory moved Chelsea up to fifth in the Premier League table and brought an end to a three-match winless run.
Chelsea had lost to Arsenal and Brentford before drawing 2-2 with Burnley. Their convincing result against Bournemouth ended that sequence and lifted Alonso’s side to fifth place.
