Bayer Leverkusen’s head coach Xabi Alonso provided reassuring news to fans, announcing the imminent return of Nigerian striker Victor Boniface to the squad after a lengthy injury layoff. The former Real Madrid midfielder expressed his confidence in Boniface’s readiness to step back onto the pitch, highlighting the player’s determination and strong mentality.

Victor Boniface, who had been sidelined due to an adductor injury sustained during Nigeria’s preparations for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, is set to make his long-awaited comeback under the stewardship of Alonso.

Despite months of rehabilitation following surgery, Boniface has shown remarkable dedication in his recovery, impressing his coach with his commitment and resilience.

At a press conference preceding the crucial cup tie, Alonso revealed the positive developments regarding Boniface’s fitness, indicating that the Nigerian forward had fully immersed himself in training sessions and was eager to resume competitive action.

While Alonso tempered expectations regarding Boniface’s potential playing time, citing concerns over match fitness, he expressed optimism about the player’s capacity to contribute positively to the team.

“It’s a great situation. Everyone except Arthur is there,” affirmed Alonso, underscoring the significance of Boniface’s return to bolster Leverkusen’s squad depth for the pivotal fixture.

Speaking specifically about Boniface, Alonso commended the striker’s diligent efforts during his rehabilitation period, emphasizing his unwavering desire to return to the field of play.

“Not 90 minutes. 45 maybe not. But maybe 30. He recovered well and trained well. He has a strong mentality to come back.

He can’t wait to come back,” Alonso remarked, echoing his admiration for Boniface’s resilience and mental fortitude in overcoming adversity.

As Bayer Leverkusen prepares to face Fortuna Düsseldorf in the German Cup semi-final showdown, all eyes will be on Boniface as he seeks to make a triumphant return to competitive football, showcasing his determination to make a meaningful impact for his team on the grand stage.
