World Cup dream drives Bebe’s late-career ambition with Cape Verde
Former Manchester United forward Bebé has set his sights on one final career milestone, with the veteran attacker hoping to be part of Cape Verde national football team history at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Now playing for UD Ibiza in the twilight of his career, the 35-year-old admits the global showpiece represents the one major achievement still missing from his journey across European football.
Having featured in Spain for clubs such as Rayo Vallecano, SD Eibar and Real Zaragoza, Bebe believes his experience could still prove valuable on the international stage.
“It’s not up to me to make that decision… but the truth is that it would be a unique opportunity for me,” he said.
After a two-year absence from the national setup, the forward insists he remains ready to contribute if called upon. His motivation is rooted not only in personal ambition but also in the historic significance of Cape Verde’s qualification for their first World Cup.
A nation of just over half a million people, their presence on football’s biggest stage represents a remarkable achievement.
“For the country it’s like the ultimate… it is historical.”
Bebe emphasised that Cape Verde’s progress has been earned on merit, highlighting the team’s development and growing confidence.
With a mix of emerging talent and experienced players, he believes the side can defy expectations against more established opponents.
“I think Cape Verde can surprise some teams.”
Drawn against heavyweights including Spain national football team and Uruguay national football team, Cape Verde face a daunting group.
However, Bebe is adamant that his country should not be underestimated, pointing to their collective belief and steady evolution in recent years.
“For me, it would be… the best thing that could happen to me in my life.”
For a player who has experienced the highs of elite football, including working under Alex Ferguson, the World Cup offers a fitting final chapter.
Whether selected or not, Bebe maintains his commitment to the national cause, but the dream of representing Cape Verde on the biggest stage remains firmly alive.
