Ivory Coast fans denied US visas

Ivory Coast will be without the backing of hundreds of travelling supporters from home during the 2026 FIFA World Cup after visa difficulties prevented many fans from making the journey to the United States.

The tournament, which is being jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, was expected to attract supporters from across the globe. However, for many fans of Ivory Coast, the dream of supporting the Elephants on football’s biggest stage has been cut short.

According to reports, members of the National Supporters’ Committee were unable to obtain the visas required to enter the United States, forcing them to abandon plans to travel and cheer on the team during the competition.

The development has sparked disappointment among supporters, who had been preparing for months to accompany the African champions to North America and create the vibrant atmosphere for which Ivorian fans are renowned.

In an interview with AFP, the National Supporters’ Committee president Julien Kouadio Adonis expressed frustration over the situation and the impact it has had on supporters.

“The supporters have cancelled the trip because the US government does not want to see supporters from certain countries, including Ivory Coast, on its soil. The United States has been clear with us, saying they do not want to see our supporters.”

“This situation is very painful for us as it prevents us from fulfilling our fundamental duty, which is to support our team. We could have showcased our culture and our expertise as supporters in the stands.”

The decision means the Elephants will be deprived of a significant portion of their traditional support base during a tournament where fan presence often plays a crucial role in motivating players and creating a home-away-from-home atmosphere.

Ivorian supporters are widely regarded as some of the most passionate on the African continent, known for their colourful displays, musical performances and unwavering backing of the national team. Their absence is expected to be keenly felt throughout the tournament.

Despite the setback, there is some consolation for the West African nation. Around ten officials from the supporters’ committee were reportedly able to secure the necessary travel documents and have made the trip to the United States.

In addition, the national team is expected to receive strong support from the sizeable Ivorian diaspora living across North America. Thousands of Ivorians based in the United States and Canada are expected to attend matches, ensuring the Elephants will not be entirely without backing in the stands.

The issue also adds to growing concerns surrounding travel and visa arrangements for fans attending the expanded 48-team World Cup. While players, officials and accredited personnel have generally been able to secure entry, supporters from several countries have faced challenges navigating visa requirements and travel regulations.

For the Ivorian supporters who had hoped to witness their team compete on the global stage, the disappointment remains profound. Many had viewed the tournament as a unique opportunity to represent their country abroad, celebrate Ivorian culture and support the Elephants in person during one of the most important competitions in football.

As Ivory Coast begin their World Cup journey, the players will carry not only the hopes of those present in the stadiums but also those of countless supporters back home who were denied the chance to make the trip. Despite the obstacles, fans across the country will be hoping the Elephants can produce a memorable campaign and give them something to celebrate from afar.
