World Cup 2026: Tunisia settle on Hervé Renard as new coach after Sabri Lamouchi sacking
Tunisia are reportedly on the verge of appointing experienced French coach Hervé Renard as their new head coach following the dismissal of Sabri Lamouchi after the team’s heavy defeat to Sweden at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Eagles of Carthage suffered a disappointing 5-1 loss in their opening group-stage match, prompting swift action from the Tunisian Football Federation as they attempt to revive their campaign.
Renard Close to World Cup Return
According to French journalist Romain Molina, Renard is expected to take charge of Tunisia unless there is a dramatic change in the coming hours.
Molina reported that the Tunisian Football Federation has presented the Frenchman with a long-term project extending beyond the current World Cup, offering assurances designed to convince him to remain in charge after the tournament.
If appointed, Renard would immediately take over a side facing a difficult battle to reach the knockout stages.
Third World Cup Team for Renard
A move to Tunisia would see Renard coach a third different nation at the FIFA World Cup.
The French tactician previously guided Morocco at the 2018 World Cup before taking charge of Saudi Arabia at the 2022 tournament, where he famously oversaw the historic victory against Argentina.
Renard had been expected to lead Saudi Arabia again at the 2026 World Cup but was dismissed less than two months before the tournament began, with Greek coach Giorgos Donis taking over.
Tunisia Seeking a Turnaround
The reported coaching change comes at a critical stage of Tunisia’s World Cup campaign.
After the heavy defeat to Sweden, the North Africans still have two group-stage matches remaining and must improve quickly to keep their qualification hopes alive.
Tunisia are scheduled to face Japan on Sunday before taking on the Netherlands in their final group match on Friday.
A Familiar Face for African Football
Renard remains one of the most respected coaches in African football, having enjoyed successful spells across the continent and winning the Africa Cup of Nations with two different countries.
His appointment would bring valuable World Cup experience to a Tunisia side desperate for inspiration as they attempt to recover from a nightmare start to the tournament.
