Hervé Renard concedes defeat against Japan

Tunisia coach Hervé Renard has admitted his side were thoroughly outplayed after the Eagles of Carthage suffered another heavy defeat at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, confirming their elimination from the tournament.

The North Africans endured a difficult evening on 21 June as they fell to a dominant Japan side in their second Group F match at the World Cup currently being staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Speaking after the defeat, Renard did not hide his frustration and disappointment, openly acknowledging the quality gap between Tunisia and their opponents.

“We were too loose defensively. The players tried their best and didn’t give up. But we were beaten by a team that is far superior to us. We need to hang in there during these difficult times. It’s going to take pride to play the third match to the best of our ability,” Renard said.

The defeat means Tunisia become the first African nation eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup following back-to-back heavy losses in Group F.

The Eagles of Carthage had already been thrashed 5-1 by Sweden in their opening game, a humiliating result that led to the dismissal of former coach Sabri Lamouchi.

Renard was appointed on 15 June in an emergency attempt to revive Tunisia’s campaign, but the experienced French tactician has been unable to stop the team’s collapse on the global stage.

Defensive frailties once again haunted Tunisia, who struggled to cope with Japan’s movement, intensity and clinical finishing throughout the encounter.

Despite the disappointment, Renard has urged his players not to give up ahead of their final group match, insisting that national pride and professionalism must still drive the team forward even with elimination already confirmed.

Tunisia’s disastrous campaign marks a painful setback for one of Africa’s traditionally consistent World Cup representatives, with serious questions now expected over the future direction of the national team after the tournament.
