World Cup 2026: Spain star Lamine Yamal makes surprise promise ahead of tournament
Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal has revealed an exciting promise he would fulfil if Spain go on to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The teenage star, who is currently continuing his recovery and preparations ahead of the tournament, shared the comments during an episode on his YouTube channel where he responded to questions from fans.
Light Moments and Personal Reflections
Yamal also opened up about several personal topics, including why he has been seen wearing a bandage on his hand. He explained that the injury happened while he was playing video games at home.
“Well, one day, while I was playing PlayStation, I hit the TV, and my fingers swelled up a lot. So I bandaged them. Then I realised they looked good on me, just like they do on Benzema, and I decided to keep them.”
The young forward also spoke about his reaction to the Ballon d’Or result, where Ousmane Dembele was crowned winner. He admitted he initially believed he had a chance of winning but later reflected positively on the outcome.
“Honestly, I thought I would win it that day because of many events. I think Dembele winning it was great for me. Besides, it helped me mature personally, I don’t think the timing was right for me, because I was still young, and perhaps I wouldn’t have realised then the true meaning of winning the Ballon d’Or. We’ll see if this year is my year.”
Strong Relationship With Dembele
Yamal also spoke warmly about his relationship with Dembele, explaining that the two share a good friendship despite the competitive nature of football.
“Ousmane and I get along perfectly. I spent a lot of time with him, and we talked a lot. He even asked me how I was a few days ago.”
He added that their bond has remained strong, including interactions during award ceremonies and regular conversations off the pitch.
Praise for Underrated Players
The Barcelona star also highlighted several players he believes do not receive enough recognition, naming Fabian Ruiz, Merino, and Gerard Martin among others.
He questioned why some players are considered underrated despite their achievements, pointing out Cole Palmer as an example of a player already performing at a high level.
Bold World Cup Promise
Looking ahead to the tournament, Yamal ended with a playful but confident promise if Spain lift the World Cup trophy.
“I will grow a beard and a mustache… I will grow them for three weeks.”
Spain will head into the 2026 World Cup as one of the favourites, with expectations high on their emerging young talents to make a major impact on the global stage.
