World Cup 2026: South Africa battle to 1-1 draw against Czech Republic to stay in qualification race
South Africa secured their first point of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Czech Republic in their Group A encounter at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
A late penalty from Teboho Mokoena rescued the Bafana Bafana after they had fallen behind early in the contest.
Early Miss Sets the Tone Before Czech Republic Strike First
The Czech Republic almost made a dream start just a minute into the match. Patrik Schick got on the end of a perfectly delivered cross into the penalty area but failed to convert, sending his bullet header narrowly wide of the right post.
They did not have to wait long for another chance, however, as Michal Sadilek broke the deadlock in the 6th minute. After finding space inside the box, he met a pass from Alexandr Sojka and calmly guided the ball into the right post to give Czech Republic a 1-0 lead.
South Africa Hang in as Pressure Builds
After conceding early, South Africa worked to steady themselves and stay in the contest, with the game becoming more balanced as it progressed. The Bafana Bafana remained disciplined and gradually forced their way back into the match.
Mokoena Delivers Late Penalty Equaliser
The turning point arrived in the 82nd minute when Pavel Sulc was penalised for handball inside the area, handing South Africa a crucial penalty opportunity.
Teboho Mokoena stepped up in the 83rd minute and produced a composed finish, striking low into the left corner beyond the reach of Matej Kovar to level the score at 1-1.
Qualification Hopes Still Alive for South Africa
The draw keeps South Africa firmly in contention for a place in the Round of 32, but their path remains straightforward yet demanding. The Bafana Bafana must now secure victory in their final Group A match against South Korea to progress further in the tournament.
