Former Algeria international Hilal Soudani has expressed confidence that the Desert Foxes can spring a major surprise against Argentina, drawing inspiration from Saudi Arabia’s historic victory over the South American giants at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Soudani Eyes Another World Cup Shock

Algeria begin their World Cup campaign with a daunting Group J encounter against reigning world champions Argentina at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.

While acknowledging the challenge that awaits, Soudani believes football has repeatedly shown that underdogs are capable of producing memorable upsets on the biggest stage.

“The group is not easy, as Argentina, Austria and Jordan are strong teams, and Argentina is the top contender in the group, everyone knows that,” Soudani told Al Arabiya.

Saudi Arabia’s Victory Offers Inspiration

The former Algerian star pointed to Saudi Arabia’s remarkable 2-1 victory over Argentina during the group stage of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar as proof that no result can be taken for granted.

“But football doesn’t recognize certainties. We saw Saudi Arabia beat Argentina in the last World Cup, so I think anything is possible in football.”

Saudi Arabia’s victory remains one of the greatest World Cup upsets in recent history and serves as a reminder that favourites can be vulnerable when the tournament begins.

Tough Tests Await in Group J

Beyond Argentina, Soudani expects Algeria to face difficult challenges against Austria and Jordan as they pursue a place in the knockout rounds.

“The matches will also be difficult against Austria and Jordan; the match against Jordan in particular will be an Arab summit.”

The former forward stressed that every opponent deserves respect regardless of reputation or previous World Cup experience.

“In the World Cup, no team can be underestimated. All competitors must be respected, whether they are major teams or teams participating in the tournament for the first time.”

Belief in Algeria’s Quality

Despite the demanding nature of the group, Soudani remains optimistic about Algeria’s chances of progressing.

“I know it (qualifying) will not be easy, but we certainly have the opportunity because we have quality players. I hope they can get past the group stage and reach the round of 16, or maybe even further.”

Message of Support for Arab Nations

Soudani concluded by extending his support to all Arab representatives competing at the tournament while expressing hope that Algeria can enjoy a memorable campaign.

“I wish all the Arab teams the best of luck and hope they have a great tournament, and of course I wish the best for my country, Algeria.”

As Algeria prepare to face one of football’s most formidable sides, the Desert Foxes will hope to write their own chapter of World Cup history and perhaps follow the example set by Saudi Arabia four years ago.
