Karim Benzema explored Lyon return

Lyon’s hierarchy reportedly explored the possibility of bringing Karim Benzema back to his boyhood club in what would have been one of the most sensational returns in French football.

According to reports, the former France international, who has Algeria roots was open to spending a season at Lyon without receiving a salary, with his willingness to return driven purely by his love for the club and his hometown.

The prospect of seeing the 2022 Ballon d’Or winner back at the club where his professional career began generated excitement, with Benzema himself said to have been particularly enthusiastic about the possibility.

However, despite the interest from Lyon and the player’s willingness to make the move, a return ultimately proved impossible due to Benzema’s existing commitments in Saudi Arabia.

The 38-year-old remains an ambassador for the Saudi Arabian league until 2030, an agreement he intends to honour despite recently leaving Al-Hilal. The terms of that commitment reportedly prevent him from signing for a club outside Saudi Arabia, effectively ending any hopes of an immediate reunion with Lyon.

Benzema became a free agent around a week ago after mutually agreeing with Al-Hilal to terminate the final year of his contract.

His departure came after a highly successful spell with the Saudi club, where he won the league title and two domestic cups. His impressive performances also earned him the league’s Most Valuable Player award.

Despite spending the latter stages of his career away from France, Benzema has maintained a strong emotional connection with Lyon, the club that gave him his breakthrough in professional football before his move to Real Madrid in 2009.

The veteran forward previously admitted in December that a return to Lyon remained a possibility, although he also suggested that there was value in preserving memories from the past.

While a fairytale return to the Groupama Stadium will not materialise for now, Benzema’s reported willingness to play without a salary underlines the strong bond he continues to share with his childhood club and the city where his remarkable football journey began.
