World Cup 2026: Ronwen Williams wary of South Korea challenge ahead of decisive clash
South Africa captain Ronwen Williams expects a difficult encounter against South Korea in Bafana Bafana’s final Group A match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Thursday.
The clash is shaping up to be a decisive one for South Africa, who still harbour hopes of progressing to the next round of the tournament currently taking place in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Bafana Bafana sit fourth in Group A with one point following their 1-1 draw against Czech. South Korea occupy second place, while co-hosts Mexico lead the standings and Czech are third.
With qualification still mathematically possible, South Africa are expected to go all out in pursuit of victory, knowing their best chance of advancing could come through securing one of the tournament’s best third-place spots.
However, Williams admits the Asian side will provide a stern test.
“It’s going to be tough, it’s going to be tough, I mean, they are so good,” Williams said, as quoted by Sporty TV.
“The movement, the quality, the power, the speed and the quality of the players, you know, it’s amazing.”
Despite acknowledging the strength of their opponents, the Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper believes the match presents another opportunity for South Africa to compete at the highest level.
“It’s another opportunity for us to go and compete and I’m sure the guys will be ready then,” he added.
Williams further explained that preparation and tactical discipline will be crucial if Bafana are to stand a chance against the Koreans.
“We have to analyse them to see their strengths and weaknesses, how we can potentially hurt them as well and how they can hurt us.”
The match is scheduled to kick off at 3am South African time on Thursday, with South Africa aiming to keep their World Cup dream alive.
